Review and Giveaway: ENERGYbits

When I heard about ENERGYbits, I was skeptical. There are so many supplements, pre-workout concoctions and "natural" foods that are supposed to boost energy, but the right workout program, a sound diet, enough sleep, and proper recovery are the only things that produce consistent results for me. When ENERGYbits offered me a complimentary two-serving sample, I didn't expect miracles. But if what I read about the benefits of Spirulina algae was true, it couldn't hurt to give them a try!

Both of my ENERGYbits tests took place at my home away from home - CrossFit Love. "Fish food" was the first thing that came to mind when I opened the container. The directions suggested two options for consumption - swallowing or chewing.

During the initial test, I popped one in my mouth, bit down, and immediately regretted it. The tab didn't dissolve like a chewable vitamin would, it tastes like I'd imagine fish food might taste, and I ended up with dark green matter stuck in all of my teeth. I took the remaining 29 of the recommended 30 tabs in three separate swallows with generous helpings of water; that's definitely my preferred method for consumption.

During the first test, I was four days into a cold and determined not to miss another day of CrossFit training. Despite taking one unplanned day off that week to try and recover, I could still feel the symptoms (aches, stuffy nose, cough, etc.) that come with the territory. I was also sore from the previous day's workouts, which is a normal occurrence in my CrossFit life. I popped the recommended 30 tabs a half hour before my workout, which included heavy back squats, heavy strict overhead presses, strict pullups and a six minute bodyweight metabolic conditioning component.

I expected to feel run down from the cold and fatigued from the previous days of training, but found myself able to sustain my normal level of intensity. Two hours later, I still felt great. When I mentioned the results to the ENERGYbits Brand Manager, he wasn't surprised:
"Spirulina is a very rich source of B vitamins, which are critical for assisting in the conversion of glucose to actual fuel. This is most effective when B vitamins are consumed with protein, and spirulina has the highest protein concentration of any food in the world!"

But I was still skeptical. There are so many factors that play into how I feel during a workout - how much sleep I got, how I ate, what I ate, my mental state, and more - could I really attribute feeling good on a day I expected to feel bad to the ENERGYbits?

I'd kicked the cold by the second test day and was eager to see if I'd still feel any benefit from the ENERGYbits. I chose a CrossFit workout that involved Olympic weightlifting, heavy front squats and two big sets of unbroken pull-ups. I took 30 tabs 15 minutes before the workout, did the workout, then coached our on-ramp class. I didn't feel a burst of energy, but the hunger pangs I normally experience after waiting until 9pm to eat dinner were noticeably absent.

I'm not 100% convinced I can attribute how I felt both nights solely to the algae, but I'm mostly impressed with the ENERGYbits. I'd prefer not having to take 30 tablets at once, though I prefer the tablets to carrying liquid around and liquid algae doesn't sound appetizing! I also had trouble digesting the price - $115 for a bag of 1000 tabs. But when I broke it down, it's essentially $3/serving. If you use my discount code ("advinspired"), you'll get 20% off, which brings the price down to $2.50/serving! For that amount, you get all of this nutrition and 64% of your protein RDA. (I usually consume more protein than the RDA, but it's still a lot of protein for less than $3). Most of the high-quality beef jerky and snacks I buy cost $3/serving, if not more. And the travel tin makes it easy to carry just the quantity you need.
